Influence of Molybdenum on the Microstructure and Properties of Weld Metal with Different Manganese Contents

Pages 179-185 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

The effect of Mo content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mn-bearing all-weld- metal was studied. Mo influences markedly ferrite and bainite formation. Its effect on toughness is complex and there are contradictory reports in literature.

In the present study, coated electrodes depositing weld metal in the range 0.1–0.5 wt% Mo with Mn between 1.0 to 2.0 wt% were studied. Grain boundary components almost disappeared as Mo content increased and a general refinement of the microstructure occurred. Mo additions caused strengthening in both as-welded and stress relieved conditions. In the as-welded condition, Mo affected toughness due to its effect on microstructure and by solid solution hardening. The upper shelf energy decreased, although some improvements were detected for both 50-J transition temperature and FATT. On the other hand, in the stress relieved state additions ofMo higher than 0.3% had a deleterious effect on toughness.
