Lead-Polyphosphate Complexes

Pages 1-6 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Polyphosphate (PP) has been suggested as a means of controlling accidental flotation of sphalerite by lead (Pb) ion activation through the formation of soluble Pb-PP complexes. The polyphosphate to lead ratio in the complexes was determined from conductometric titration of polyphosphate against lead nitrate solution. Initially a precipitate forms with PP/Pb of 1/3. The precipitate dissolves in excess polyphosphate resulting in a variety of Pb-PP complexes with PP/Pb of 1/2, 1/1, 3/2, 2/1 and 3/1. Knowledge of the Pb/PP ratio in the complex could permit the quantity of PP to control Pb to be estimated.
