The Investigation of Efficient Conditions for Alumina Production from Diasporic Bauxites

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate the leach conditions of diasporic bauxites in the region of Mugla-Milas for alumina production. The chemical composition was 57.91% Al2O3, 21.33% Fe2O3, 3.84% SiO2, 2.20% TiO2, 2.10% CaO, 1.02% FeS2, 1.65% CO2, and 0.52% other. The effects of alkaline (CaO and/or Na2CO3) additives, precalcination temperature, calcination time, leaching time, solution concentration, liquid/bauxite ratio and particle size on the efficiency of alumina and silica dissolution were investigated. The optimum conditions of the process were the addition of alkaline in 0.5 mole fraction, 900 °C precalcination temperature, 2 hours of calcination time, 3 hours of leaching time, 1.5 molar Na2O of caustic concentration and liquid/bauxite ratio of 30 at the boiling temperature of leach solution under continuous stirring. Although the highest extraction efficiency of Al2O3 was found to be 81.77% with precalcination at 1200 °C, 900 °C was preferred as an optimum calcination temperature.

L’objectif principal de cette étude consistait à étudier les conditions de lessivage de bauxites diaporiques de la région de Mugla-Milas pour la production d’alumine. La composition chimique était de 57.91% Al2O3, 21.33% Fe2O3, 3.84% SiO2, 2.20% TiO2, 2.10% CaO, 1.02% FeS2, 1.65% CO2, 0.52% autre. On a étudié l’effet d’additifs alcalins (CaO et/ou Na2CO3), de la température de pré-calcination, de la durée de calcination, de la durée de lessivage, de la concentration de la solution, du rapport liquide/bauxite et de la taille de particule sur l’efficacité de la dissolution de l’alumine et de la silice. Les conditions optimales du procédé suivent: addition d’alcalin d’une fraction molaire de 0.5, température de pré-calcination de 900 °C, durée de calcination de 2 heures, durée de lessivage de 3 heures, concentration de caustique de 1.5 mole de Na2O et rapport liquide/bauxite de 30 à la température d’ébullition de la solution de lessivage sous agitation constante. Bien que la plus haute efficacité d’extraction de l’Al2O3 était de 81.77% avec une précalcination à 1200 °C, on préfère 900 °C comme température optimum de calcination.
