The Household of the Queen of France in the Sixteenth Century

CAROLINE ZUM KOLKCaroline zum Kolkwhose doctoral thesis was on the political role of the household of Catherine de’ Medici, is a scholar at the Centre de recherche du chateau de Versailles, where she is researching the evolution of the royal households in the sixreenth to eighteenth centuries. She has published articles on the role of women at the French court and the art patronage of Catherine de’ Medici and is project head of Cour de France.fr (http://cour-de-france.fr), a scholarly internet site dedicated to the court of France.

Abstract

In the long history of the household of the queen of France, the sixteenth century marked a peak: never before or since was its staff so numerous, or was it so deeply involved in lifeat court. This article will survey the history of the queen’s household and its structure and functions in the sixteenth century.
