CLARISSA CAMPBELL ORRClarissa Campbell Orr is Reader in Enlightenment Gender and Court Studies at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge Campus. She has edited two volumes of essays on queenship, in Britain and in Europe (Manchester University Press, 2002; Cambridge University Press, 2004), and is writing a biography of Mary Granville Delany for Yale University Press, as well as a study of Queen Charlotte.

Abstract

This piece by the new President of the Society for Court Studies is an extended review of a recent work on the Hanoverian court, Lucy Worsley’s Courtiers: The Secret History of Kensington Palace (2010) — which is contrasted with an overlooked source of great value for court historians, The Gentle Hertford: Her Life and Letters (1940), by Helen Sard Hughes.
