Hunting at the Courts of Francis I and Henry VIII

Pages 127-141 | Published online: 10 Nov 2014

Abstract

This article reviews the culture of hunting at the courts of England and France in the early sixteenth century and its importance as a focus for the competitive personal relationship between Francis I and Henry VIII. Correspondence between monarchs and their ambassadors reveals that the hunt was as central to diplomacy and court politics as it was to public portrayals of princely majesty and masculinity.
