Noana Issar-GrillDr. Noana Issar-Grill received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland. She completed her training in comprehensive general dentistry in the Advanced Education General Dentistry (AEGD-2) residency at Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland, Texas. Currently, she is the Flight Commander for the 48th Dental Squadron, RAF Mildenhall, England.

Howard W. RobertsDr. Howard Roberts received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Kentucky Lexington, Kentucky, and his M.S. degree in dental biomaterials from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is currently the director of Graduate Dental Research at the Keesler Air Force Base AEGD-2 Residency, Keesler AFB, Mississippi. He is a professor in comprehensive dentistry with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences of Bethesda, Maryland.

Edward F. WrightDr. Edward F. Wright received his D.D.S. degree from Case Western Reserve in 1977, graduated from a one-year general dentistry residency in 1988, graduated from the University of Minnesota’s two-year TMJ and Craniofacial Pain Fellowship in 1994, and completed a two-year TMD research fellowship at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System - Audie Murphy Division in 2003. He is the primary author of over 30 articles and the sole author of the textbook “Manual of Temporomandibular Disorders,” 2nd ed. published in 2010. He is a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and the course director for their TMD Course, Dental Anatomy and Occlusion Course, and Occlusion and TMD Course.

Sara A. DixonDr. Sara A. Dixon received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (1994), Certificate in Comprehensive General Dentistry from Wilford Hall Medical Center (2001), M.S. degree from the George Washington University (2009), Certificate in Orofacial Pain from National Naval Post Graduate Dental School (2009), and certification by the American Board of General Dentistry (2004) and the American Board of Orofacial Pain (2010). She currently serves as the Director, Orofacial Pain in the two-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, Texas, and military consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Orofacial Pain. She is an assistant professor in orofacial pain with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences of Bethesda, Maryland.

Kraig S. VandewalleDr. Kraig S. Vandewalle received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Texas in 1984, Certificate in Comprehensive General Dentistry from Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1993, and M.S. in Dental Materials from Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon in 2002. He is currently the military consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Dental Biomaterials and serves as the Director of Dental Research in the twoyear Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, TX. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the resistance to wear of six commonly used orthotic appliance materials. These materials were: SR Ivocap (Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc., Amherst, NY), Eclipse (Dentsply International, York, PA), ProBase (Ivoclar Vivadent), Valplast (Valplast International Corp., Oceanside, NY), Impak (CMP Industries LLC, Albany, NY), and Clearsplint (Astron Dental Corp., Lake Zurich, IL). Twelve cylindrical specimens of each material were fabricated per manufacturer instructions. Occlusal wear was simulated in a custom-made wear simulator with each specimen receiving four wear scars in a two-body wear simulation using a 1.5 mm tungsten-carbide tipped stylus at 40 newtons for 2500 cycles at 1 Hz, while immersed in 37°C distilled water (n=48). The specimens were evaluated before and after wear testing using a three-dimensional (3D) noncontact profilometer (Proscan 2000, Scantron Corp., Eagan, MN). A mean change in volume was determined for each orthotic material. Results found that Clearsplint material displayed the greatest amount of volume loss/wear, while SR Ivocap, Eclipse, and ProBase materials had the least amount of wear. Valplast and Impak performed more moderately. Based upon this wear knowledge, practitioners are able to more reliably choose the appliance material necessary for their various patients.
