Abstract
Few industries have had such a long tradition of craftsmanship as the wool textile industry. One has only to recollect the various Guilds; from medieval times, those of the weavers, the combers, the fullers, the cloth workers and the dyers, to have some idea as to the length of this tradition.
Indeed, at one time it was all craftsmanship, if that is the right word, because much of the handicraft work of textiles must have been boring by nature. One would not choose to spend days spinning yarn on a hand wheel, weaving on a hand loom, or even treading away in a trough to full the cloth.
