Abstract
In the headnote to nos. 3–4 - Head, No Hair - of his monumental English Riddles from Oral Tradition, Archer Taylor uses the term ‘the Scotch bell riddle’. He cites two examples, one from Gregor:
It sits high,/An cries sair,/Hiz [has] the head,/But wints the hair. - The townclock. and one from Findlay:
What is that Hings heich, and cries sair,/Has a heid, and nae hair? - A bell.
