How to Select the Best Monomer for Implant Pathology

Pages 237-243 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

There are a variety of hard and soft implant materials currently approved for surgical intervention. Metals, plastics, fabrics, tissue-engineered absorbable scaffolds, hydrogels, etc. are just a few of the implant materials available. Each material has unique requirements for processing and embedding. Some are sensitive to light, chemicals, and/or heat. In the case of absorbable polymers, it is important to use an embedding media that will not chemically interact with the polymer to accurately evaluate the tissue/material absorption rate. It is best to choose an embedding media that matches the density of the implant/tissue. Also, certain plastics are more conducive to accepting a wide variety of stains. This article will discuss how to perform a pilot study to determine the best monomer for embedding each implant or if cryosectioning is the technique to choose. (The J Histotechnol 29:237, 2006)
