Water Reuse Relieves Drought Effects in Queensland, Australia

Pages 60-64 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Many water agencies worldwide are considering high-quality reclaimed wastewater for industrial purposes to reduce demand on their potable water supplies. Because of a severe drought in Queensland, Australia, the Moreton Bay Regional Council implemented the Murrumba Downs Advanced Water Treatment Plant (AWTP) to produce up to 1.1 mgd (4,000 m3/day) of high-quality reclaimed water to replace potable water use at a local paper products manufacturing facility. In addition, AWTP treatment residuals are treated and discharged to a local river in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency statutes.
