Seawater Desalination Pretreatment for Harmful Algae Blooms Using Dissolved-Air Flotation

Pages 34-37 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

As world water resources struggle to support a growing population, desalination is attracting more attention, especially in coastal cities. However, seasonal harmful algae blooms (HABs), commonly referred to as “red tides,” can cause problems during desalination pretreatment. Algae blooms foul reverse osmosis membranes, can be responsible for shutting down desalination plants, and may lead to taste-and-odor problems. Some algae blooms release toxic substances. It is difficult to anticipate algae blooms. This article examines pilots at four Middle East locations to better understand dissolved-air flotation algae removal processes.
