Friction and wear as related to the composition, structure, and properties of metals

Pages 57-67 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

System-dependent characteristics of friction and wear are emphasized. The nature of friction and its relation to various wear processes is discussed. It is shown that in the mechanical-contact process mechanical interaction of surface asperities as well as adhesion, due to interatomic forces, playa role. The effects of hardness, composition, crystal structure, and catalytic action (on lubricants) are illustrated by examples based on engineering experience. Typical classes of low-friction anti-wear materials are briefly outlined.
