Abstract
During 2001 and 2002, the Outokumpu Stainless Melting and Continuous Casting plant in Sheffield was reconfigured to provide a world class single site process route for long products. The existing EAF–AOD–LAF melting facility has been complemented by a dedicated six-strand billet caster with EMS and turnover bed cooling, to allow production of a wide range of grades. The successful planning, commissioning and process improvements achieved are described. Much of this can success is attributed to operational expertise of Sheffield staff, who were closely involved from an early stage of planning.
