Explosives and Energetic Chemicals Problems, Uses, Hazards and Control

Pages 133-143 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Energy releasing (energetic) materials find many uses in society today and range from those that are very fast reacting, such as explosives, to more slowly reacting ones, such as sponge blowing agents used to foam plastics. Their energetic (exothermic) nature means that the hazards involved must be determined for the different circumstances that apply in their manufacture, transport, storage and use. This review examines what constitutes an energetic material, accidents that have occurred involving such chemicals, systems to establish and control the hazards encountered and some areas of research being undertaken to resolve problems that still exist.
