Abstract
The 'dumb' structural materials of the past are now becoming 'smarter'. A fusion between 'designer' materials and information sensing and processing has enabled the performance characteristics of a material to be changed in real time. The current state of the art and commercial advantages of smart materials and structures are described and evaluated.
