Spore output of moss capsules in relation to ontogeny of archesporial tissue

Pages 61-74 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

The spore output in several species of mosses has been estimated by direct count as well as by calculation on the basis of measurements of archesporial tissue. In consequence of a very regular structure and development of this tissue, the results obtained by the two methods agree reasonably. The spore output varies from less than twenty in Archidium alternifolium to far in excess of 50 million in Dawsonia lativaginata. An outline of the procedures is given and the ontogeny of the archesporial tissue is discussed.
