Abstract
Orthotrichum firmum Vent., previously known from East Africa, is reported from the Nilghiri Hills in South India. This supports the Gondwana origin of species with long exserted, smooth capsules within the section Leiocarpa Mol. Morphological differences in perichaetial leaves between O. firmum and O. arborescens Thér. & Nav. are reported.
