The History of the Gih on Spring in Jerusalem

&
Pages 211-223 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

The perennial spring at the eastern side of ancient Jerusalem is identified with the biblical Gihon and is frequently mentioned in the documents. Its history is summarized in the light of new archaeological data. Associated ceramics from several periods have been recovered, but explanations are proposed for three gaps in the archaeological record, which are marked by a complete absence of ceramic evidence during the Late Bronze Age and Iron I, Persian and Early Hellenistic, and the Byzantine to Crusader periods.
