Christian Gottlob Heyne and the University Library at Göttingen as ‘Universalbibliothek’ of the Eighteenth Century

Abstract

C. G. Heyne was University Librarian of Göttingen for almost fifty years. He was responsible for building up the collections of what was in the eighteenth century a ‘new’ university into one of the premier research institutions in Europe. In particular he amassed the then largest collection of pre-I8oI English books outside England.
