Universalbibliothek der Trivialliteratur', 1800-1830: Castle Corvey and the Distribution of Circulating-Library Fiction in English

Pages 117-132 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Surprising as it may seem, the library of a castle in northern Germany contains one of the best extant collections outside the United Kingdom of early nineteenth-century novels of the kind found so frequently in circulating libraries of the period. Acquired as part of a deliberate policy by a German bibliophile princess, the collection could be described as approaching a ‘universal library of trivial literature’.
