Abstract
This short paper introduces a collection of seven papers which formed the backbone of a meeting on the theme ‘Recrystallization in the Control of Microstructure’. The object of the meeting was to relate the fundamental work on mechanisms to the solution of practical problems and the improvement of material quality and properties. The relationships between grain structure and properties are not specifically dealt with in the seven papers but are briefly outlined here to clarify the context of the meeting and of the succeeding papers. More comprehensive surveys of this subject can be found in review papers by Davies and by Dillamore.
