Abstract
The volume contractions accompanying solidification of pure aluminium, aluminium–4.5 wt.-% copper and the intermetallic phase Al2Cu have been determined experimentally. The following values were obtained,

It is concluded that the smaller values for the contraction associated with the appearance of Al2Cu in the eutectic phase could contribute to the reduced degree of solidification cracking observed in alloys at higher solute concentrations.
