Malvolio's Manipulated Name

Pages 95-102 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The way Malvolio's name in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night relates to the code he gives us, M.DA.I., suggests some kind of correlation or metathesis. The most provocative solution is a recondite French origin, notably by way of Montaigne (but also in terms of Malvenu in Spenser's Faerie Queene).
