Abstract

The goal of this reflection is to review the new nature of work on a global level, to attempt to update and, where appropriate, to restate the concept as used in occupational therapy, and to examine the consequent professional implications. There are many proposed concepts about what work means, not only in occupational therapy, but also in many disciplines. Nevertheless, in spite of inter-disciplinary efforts to achieve one clear definition, current world trends necessitate a restatement of, and perhaps a recreation of, traditional construction of the concept work. It has been a common assumption that work is a dimension round which to develop our lives. Nevertheless, such explanations are in clear contradiction of global reality, taking into account the generalized tendency towards reduction and uncertainty in the use of labour, described for many as “the end of work”.
