Abstract
A close analysis of the significance of the relationship in the therapeutic situation is important for occupational therapists who work in mental health. The relationship in occupational therapy is actually an interactive process between therapist, client and doing or occupation. Research on infant development has shown that the emotions and relationships which are part of the interactive process between baby and carers contribute to mental functions. In therapy situations something similar happens and can be demonstrated with specific examples. The role of occupational therapists using this approach is that of creating and maintaining an interactive process which can produce the growth of mental functions in their clients.
