Geste et Repre´ sentation de Soi

Abstract

The question of gesture, in its ability to restore to the body, a certain awareness to self and others, is omnipresent in the clinical approach of psychosis and serious narcissism pathologies. Beyond any organic affection, the subject does not want or cannot do activities of daily living which have become impossible to accomplish. The subject seems to actively or passively resist to any solicitation from the external world. This shows an impossible work of reappropriating his or her own story, due to a lack of representation and symbolization. Therapeutic activities involving symbol-bearing objects such as argile modeling, drawing or writing and the gestures involved in those activities are then susceptible of receiving and remobilizing a work of self-representation, external to oneself and through non-self materials. The therapeutic impact of those plastic gestures lies in a conjunction, a freedom and a fullness of accomplishment not submitted to any aesthetic or functional finality. In the rediscovered group atmosphere psychic-life traces emerge, are shared, and evolve in the presence of other.
