Developing Competency for Work in Other Countries: Lessons Learned from Internationally Educated Occupational Therapists in Canada

Abstract

Occupational therapists wishing to undertake international work face unique challenges. The experiences of 17 internationally educated occupational therapists were recorded as part of a national study that investigated factors influencing the workforce integration of international graduates in Canada. A purposeful maximum variation sample of internationally educated occupational therapists that arrived in Canada between 2000 and 2005 participated in the interviews. The findings of the interviews provide insight into preparations needed for international work, dealing with language and cultural issues and finding a job in another country.
