Abstract

The family is a fundamental component in the recovery of patients who have suffered a stroke. In this study, participation is necessary to carry out the protocol for modified constraint-induced movement therapy. The objectives are to increase the eligibility of patients who can benefit and to explore how social support may influence rehabilitation and activities of daily living and therefore have an impact in this increment. For this purpose we performed a randomized clinical trial (n = 60) with experimental group and control group with a similar baseline, where both perform occupational therapy but only experimental group was exposed also to modified constraint-induced movement therapy, with support from the family. Improvement is observed regarding the eligibility from a 0.98%, with no family support, to a 29%. In addition the social and family support contributes to a better recovery of cognitive abilities, as well as an increased recovery in instrumental activities of daily living.
