Densification of T1 High Speed Steel Powders by Vacuum Sintering

Pages 109-113 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The vacuum sintering characteristics of cold compacted T1 type water atomised powders containing <0·02, 0·25, and 0·51 wt-%Mo were investigated by varying the sintering time and temperature. Over the temperature range 1290–1340°C, the dependence of sintered density on sintering temperature and molybdenum content is presented showing the profound effect of molybdenum and indicating that 0·5 wt-%Mo is necessary for satisfactory sintering characteristics and microstructure. Densification could be rapid, depending on sintering temperature, e.g. maximum density (> 99·5% theoretical) was achieved after only 10 min at 1320°C. Microstructural developments during sintering were investigated and typical micrographs are presented. It can be concluded that densification is via liquid phase mechanisms and the involvement of carbon and molybdenum is discussed. PM/0477
