Abstract
Measurements of the decrease in intensity of infrared radiation beams transmitted through particle clouds disseminated in a 160 m3 sphere allowed values of the spectral mass extinction coefficient (α) and the bulk extinction coefficient (β)to be determined at wavelengths from 2·5 to 12 μmfor a variety of metallic and non-metallic powders. For each powder, several different procedures were then used to determine particle dimensions and morphologies. The results are discussed in terms of the identification and procurement of fine particulate materials which can be dispersed as an airborne suspension to provide effective screening against electro-optic weapon systems operating in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum.
