Influence of Kirkendall Effect on Sintering of Copper–Nickel Powder Mixtures

Pages 285-288 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The influence of the Kirkendall effect on the sintering of copper-nickel mixtures has been studied by dilatometry and micrography, varying both the composition and granulometry. It has been found that this effect produces significant porosity in the copper grains. The optimum composition for giving maximum porosity depends on the relative size of the powder grains, as is confirmed by the proposed model. This porosity, when significant, slows down shrinkage. It is also found that a rapid heating rate minimises this slowdown. PM/0534
