Effect of degassing of SiC reinforced 6061 aluminium alloy composites on properties

Pages 333-338 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

6061 aluminium alloy reinforced with 8 vol.-%SiC particulate composite was produced by PM processing. The compressibility and properties of samples made using different sized powders were compared. To obtain a high density sample, MA powders were degassed at 300–500°C under hydrogen. The results show that the degassing process prior to pressing improves compressibility and green strength and removes some impurities from the powder.
