Ankle injury in sports: role of motor control systems and implications for prevention and rehabilitation

Pages 79-87 | Published online: 05 Sep 2013

Abstract

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the many intrinsic factors that contribute to ankle injury. Material is integrated from a number of areas that offer the physiotherapist insight into the processes that govern movement control at the ankle. This review examines the movement control constraints to ankle joint stability that may arise from a range of sensory inputs (at the micro level) in order to better understand the role of such inputs in movement and in protection from injury. How the ankle joint functions in a system of multi-linked segments (at the macro level) will also be considered to assist in understanding the response to disturbances to normal movement. Finally, suggestions for ankle injury prevention and rehabilitation are outlined.
