Stiffness of Human Body Joints

Pages 181-184 | Published online: 05 Sep 2013

Abstract

The load-deformation characteristics of body joints are reviewed in relation to the mechanics of the constituents of soft tissues of joints. Some of the concepts in clinical assessment ofjoint stiffness are discussed, in the light of the knowledge in joint mechanics. Quantification of the load-deformation characteristics of body joints is clinically essential, as it can provide information which is not available from conventional goniometric assessment. The load-deformation curve provides a complete documentation of joint stiffness, and allows the determination of size of the neutral zone. The curve may be concisely described by a polynomial equation. It is concluded that clinical devices should be developed to quantify the load-deformation characteristics of physiotherapeutic procedures.
