Ankle Inversion Injury: A Review of the Relevant Biomechanical and Clinical Features

Pages 251-265 | Published online: 05 Sep 2013

Abstract

This paper reviews the different aspects in the literature that influence our understanding of ankle inversion movement. The relevant biomechanical features of the inversion movement are presented, based on studies that have investigated the subject throughout the last two decades. The epidemiology of inversion injury in different sports groups, as well as the common definition and classification of the inversion injury, are also introduced. Different methods of measuring the inversion movement are presented, in order to verify whether different research projects undertaken in this domain have evaluated the movement in relation to the weight-bearing mechanism of ankle inversion injury. Finally, the effects of different external supports and the methods used to detect these effects, as described in the literature, are also presented and discussed.
