Conceptual Design of a Modular Transuranic Waste Container for use at the Wipp Repository

Pages 19-25 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The approach and ideas involved in the conceptual design of a US NRC Type-B shipping cask, designed for use at the WIPP repository, are outlined. The Modular Transuranic Waste (MTW) container is designed to provide a 30% better utilisation of its inside cavity capacity compared to the current TRUPACT II model, and its modular design allows for the transport of CH-TRU waste in 208 1 (55 gallon) drums, as well as RH-TRU waste in standard 3-drum canisters. The design capacity of the MTW container is 54 CH-TRU drums, one 3,624 kg (8000 lb), or two 2900 kg (6400 lb) RH-TRU canisters. The conceptual design summarises current studies under way at the University of New Mexico; preliminary results are presented, including an overview of the design properties of the MTW container.
