A Transport Incident Database

Pages 117-119 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

A computer database of UK transport incidents involving radioactive materials assists those responsible for regulations and those who undertake transport operations. Data have been analysed from 1964 to 1991. Incidents involving radioactive materials are infrequent and significant radiation exposures to employees are rare. There have been no recorded exposures to members of the public. Inadequate preparation of packages has, however, resulted in unnecessary exposures to employees, especially industrial radiographers. The main areas for improvement are in quality assurance procedures, and in the training of staff.
