Recent Advances in Computer Impact Analysis for Radioactive Materials Transport Containers

Pages 125-131 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Packages for the transport of radioactive materials are required by international regulations(1) to meet specified impact strength requirements. In the past this has usually been demonstrated by physical drop testing. In recent years however computer impact analysis has become an attractive option due to the increased power and lower cost of computers. This paper gives examples of computer analyses of such packages compared with physical drop test results. The paper concludes by listing the advantages and disadvantages of computer analysis compared with physical testing.
