Abstract
The TRUPACT-II is a re-usable packaging, certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission as meeting the requirements for Shipment of radioactive material in occordance with provisions of the US Department of Transportation. It was primarily deSigned to ship contact-handled transuranic (atomic numbers greater than uranium) waste in 210 litre (55 US gallon) drums or standard waste boxes from US Department of Energy sites to the WIPP site, located 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. To date, the TRUPACT-II has only been used for shipments at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. This paper describes the TRUPACT-II design, testing, certificatiOn, and authorised contents; it concludes with a discussion of strategies for expanding the payload envelope.
