Transport of Radioactive Materials for Medical Use in the UK

Pages 281-286 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Although interest in the transport of radioactive materials tends to focus on the nuclear industry, by far the greatest transport of these materials occurs for medical use. These are predominantly Type A and excepted packages. Even so, under normal circumstances of transport, they account for most of the doses received by transport workers. The highest doses are received by drivers and handlers. Despite the number of packages transported, the number of incidents and accidents in which they are involved is low. Very few of these result in significant additional exposure of transport workers, emergency services or the public.
