Test Facilities for Radioactive Materials Transport Packages in Romania (SCN Pitesti)

Abstract

Radioactive materials, including wastes, generated by Romanian nuclear facilities are packaged in accordance with national and IAEA regulations for safe transport to the disposal centre. Subjecting these packages to normal and simulated test conditions accomplishes the evaluation and certification of packages in order to prove their technical pelformance. The standards provide package designers with the possibility of using analysis, testing or a combination of these. This paper describes the qualification tests for Type A and B packages used for the transport and storage of radioactive wastes, as well as the facilities and equipment used to pelform the tests at SCN Pitesti. The details in the paper follow those in the contract between SCN Pitesti and the IAEA.
