Barge Accidents and the Shipment of Spent Nuclear Fuel

Pages 39-48 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

US Coast Guard marine casualty data and US Army Corps of Engineers commodity data are used to develop barge accident statistics (accident rates and fractional occurrences of accident types). These statistical results are then used to examine the probabilities of severe accidents that might occur during the barge shipment of spent power reactor fuel from reactor sites without rail service to a nearby port with rail service.
