The Kenchreai opus sectile glass panels revisited: a comparison and assessment of previous treatments

Abstract

A recent examination of the fourth century AD opus sectile glass panels excavated 30 years ago from the underwater site of Kenchreai, Greece, showed a remarkable correlation between their preservation and the extent of conservation treatment they received. Relationships were also noted between the types of glass, amount of weathering and absorption of soluble salts. An assessment of the current conditions both on display and in storage is offered, along with recommendations for future research and conservation.
