Abstract
The Oriental manuscript collection of the Marciana National Library in Venice amounts to nearly 300 volumes of texts written in Asian languages ranging from Chinese to Indian and Hebrew. The bulk of the collection consists of Turkish, Persian and Arabic manuscripts that came to the library in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including 100 manuscripts that are still bound according to the Islamic tradition. In 2008, a project was carried out to re-house, examine, record and treat these manuscripts. Each volume was dry cleaned then placed in a phase box with custom-made internal supports where necessary. A survey of condition and technical information was carried out and details of construction and materials were studied and recorded. Storage of the results in a database allows easy queries and comparisons to be made. Minimal repairs were made to some volumes, using techniques and materials compatible with the Islamic bindings.
