Abstract
The requirements and important qualities of a lubricant are considered and a general description of the behaviour of lubricants under operating conditions is given. The influence of a component's surface roughness on its wear behaviour is discussed, with particular reference to the types of wear that can be identified. Example calculations using nomograms are shown. In these examples the oil film thicknesses required to provide sufficient lubrication under three types of wear contact (gears, and rolling and journal bearings) have been determined.
