Abstract
The results of a series of wear tests carried out on AISI8620 steel plasma carburized by the Electricity Council Research Centre's technique are compared with those obtained from specimens of the same steel gas carburized by a commercial company. Testing was carried out on a compact laboratory rig, in both the dry sliding and abrasive modes, over a range of test loads. Specific wear rate constants were computed from the wear test results and were seen to be almost identical for plasma and gas carburized specimens under both wear modes.
