Page 508 | Accepted 12 Dec 2008, Published online: 27 Jan 2009

This supplement to Current Medical Research and Opinion addresses some of the short-term consequences of stopping smoking and their management, providing readers with insight into possible negative consequences of smoking cessation some smokers face, an overview of the research evidence of the clinical management of these issues and tools for guiding patients.

This collection of four review articles, while giving due emphasis to the positive benefits of smoking cessation, covers some of the negative medical sequelae of cessation and their management. Of common nicotine withdrawal symptoms, depression and increased appetite are covered, with other contributions concerning endocrine, cardiovascular and respiratory changes.

We are most grateful to Professor Peter Hajek for acting as Guest Editor for the Supplement, and to the authors for amending their manuscripts in response to suggestions made in the course of the peer-review process. Editorial support was provided to the authors by Envision Pharma Ltd and was funded by Pfizer Ltd. The publication support costs for the Supplement were provided through an educational grant from Pfizer Ltd.
