Summary

A double-blind, cross-over trial was conducted in 12 healthy male volunteers to investigate the diuretic efficacy of a 20 mg. dosage of frusemide administered orally. The 24-hour urinary output was measured, together with the excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride. The study was conducted in the controlled environment of a clinical pharmacology unit.

Results showed that the urinary volume increased by approximately 100% and that the urine produced was comparatively dilute, with increases in sodium excretion of 55%, chloride 60%, and potassium 20%. The possible clinical advantages of hypotonic urine after diuretic therapy are discussed.
