The pharmacodynamics of oestrogen

Pages 20-27 | Published online: 19 Aug 2008

Summary

Natural oestrogens have widespread effects as well as a highly specific influence on target tissues. The loss of these hormones at the time when the ovaries cease to function can likewise have profound local and general effects. Provided care is taken to avoid administration to women with a carcinoma arising from an oestrogen target tissue, there appears to be no reason to expect any ill effect from their use. The use of non-steroidal oestrogens, however, is potentially dangerous and there appears to be nothing other than price to recommend their continued use.
